Stigma & Discrimination
Leads: Tracey Hackett and Stella
Most of us experience times when physical ill health can affect us, but in today's society there is often a lack of understanding if we suffer from some form of mental illness. It is time to change this negative attitude. Stigma and discrimination towards people
who experience mental ill health ruins the lives of sufferers, carers, and families.
Our Talk, 'Mental Illness - Fighting Fear and Stigma Together', has been put together by a volunteer who has personal experience of mental distress and mental health services. Our volunteer has professional knowledge and feels strongly about the negative impact
stigma and discrimination has had on her and her family.
The Talk can be delivered to a wide range of audiences, including community groups, mental health groups, mental health professionals and other providers that have impact on the lives of people experiencing mental distress.
Objectives
- To create greater self awareness of negative stereotypes and attitudes which many hold subconsciously towards people who experience mental distress.
- Through education and new understanding, combat stigma and discrimination in personal lives and professional roles
- Improve the quality of service provision for individuals experiencing mental distress
- To contribute and support other Anti-Stigma and Discrimination, such as 'Time to Change'
