Brendan House

A safe house provides an alternative to hospital admission for people in mental health crisis. It is likely to be available for a 3 night stay.

There are times when an admission to St.George’s, Margaret Stanhope or George Bryan is necessary, but for the other times, the possibility of accessing a safe space when experiencing acute emotional and mental distress is overwhelmingly welcomed; a service that will be individually tailored, recovery orientated and holistic in approach.

It has been called Brendan House, after Brendan Commons (former Project Coordinator for SSNMH) who campaigned for many years to get a safe house for South Staffordshire.

There are safe houses in several locations in other parts of the country. For example: North Warwickshire, Shropshire, two in North Staffordshire; Brendan House will be available for referrals from across the whole of South Staffordshire.

Update

Brendan House is looked after by Housing Plus who manage the building and Richmond Fellowship, who manage the support services. The service will be taking referrals from January 2011. To be referred, please contact your Care Coordinator or a member of your Community Mental Health Team.
